Can’t Take the Music is a collection of songs that speaks to the time we are in. While the weight of the world seems to be crashing down on all of us, Can’t Take the Music is a reminder that we survive, we persevere, the music still goes on.
Gerber shows her songwriting range on this record and lives up to the Alt/country genre she places herself in. The songs range from classic country to pop rock, to a folk ballad with soaring strings. Yet, these songs all feel cohesive. They feel like they belong together, with the whine of the pedal steel as a constant through line. They speak to that part of us that wants our struggle to be seen and to be offered some ounce of hope that we’ll get through it.

About the song
Rose Gerber’s second single, Not Enough, off her upcoming LP “Can’t Take the Music, is a song that hits home if you’ve ever chased after unrequited love, with this chorus lyric summing it up “Even with nothing inside it, I want the needle back”. The song, was written from a songwriting prompt created by Portland-based songwriter, Laura Viers, that asked for neon colors, a plane crash and a hot mess of a heroine.
There are hints of sounds from bands like Cold Play and U2, with a driving rhythm guitar and soaring delay, which puts the “alt” in this alt/country bop, though True to Gerber’s love of Americana and country music, there is a familiarity and dreaminess to the tune with the reliable pedal steel peaking through, making you feel as if you’ve known it for years.
